Nepalese farmers across the country celebrated Asar Pandra, National Paddy Day or Ropain Diwas, Rastriya Dhan Diwas, by planting paddy in their fields on Tuesday. As the monsoon started, the farmers are busy on the rice fileds planting paddy seedlings, signing asare Bhaka, dancing, playing with mud and eating beaten rice and curd called "Dahi-Chiura".

The day has a significant meaning in the country with the season of cultivating paddy which is the largest crop ever produced in the country. The government, NGO's, local community and the political parties organize different programs on this day believing the day to increase the productivity in the context of growing dependency on import of food crops.

Off the Beat

The locals of Mulpani had organized the Ropain program to mark the day and they had called Agriculture Minister Hari Prasad Parajuli as a guest. The Minister was supposed to be there at 1, however he reached there at 3pm after then the Minister was asked to i9nagurate the machine which was going to be used for the first time in Ropain however he could not do it after trying for couple of times. Then, the Minister went to play the mud and what we saw was shocking as the Minister is caught teasing a girl and holding her as the girl is avoiding him. This kind of low mentality of Minister was seen live in the field.
